Kolkata, the first Major Port of India, was once the premier port of the country but since 1966-67 faced a steady decline in its fortunes being relegated to third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions. However due to wholehearted efforts of all, there had been a steady flourish in cargo and vessel handling and in different spheres of Port activity from 2004-05 to 2007-08 when our only riverine Port was positioned in the second and third slots respectively, competing with other sea ports of the country.
